Balingup

Balingup is a small but vibrant town in the South West of WA, in the picturesque Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup. It is approximately 241 kilometres south of Perth – a two and half hours’ drive, and 31 kilometres southeast of the town of Donnybrook. Balingup sits at the northern entrance to the Blackwood River Valley, surrounded by vast expanses of native forest interspersed with orchards, vineyards and farmland. This charming town offers residents a glimpse at relaxed country life.

In the 20th century, Balingup was known for fruit and vegetable growing and more recently for beef cattle and dairy farming, however these days the town is steadily becoming known for its locally handcrafted pottery, herbal skincare products, arts and crafts, and annual open gardens and festivals; which include the Small Farm Field Day in April, Telling Tales in Balingup July and the Festival of Country Gardens in Spring.

Balingup has so much to explore it’s hard to know where to start. For those who prefer moving at a slower pace, you might enjoy wandering the main street’s eclectic mix of vintage and second-hand stores and many specialty shops and galleries, before stopping at a tempting array of cafes, bakeries, and restaurants, or sampling some fresh produce and local wines.

If you want to continue on the walking journey, why not walk the Bibbulmun Track – one of the world’s greatest long-distance trails, stretching almost 1,000 kilometres from Kalamunda to Albany. The track meanders through Balingup’s Golden Valley Tree Park – a six-hectare collection of trees from around the world that forms the largest arboretum in WA, and a popular picnic spot.

If you don’t fancy exploring by foot, then Blackwood River Tourist Drive is a great way to take in some of the region’s most scenic landscapes, fascinating historical landmarks, top fishing spots and pretty picnic areas.

Balingup’s unique location makes it an ideal town in which to base yourself to explore the nearby towns of Donnybrook, Boyup Brook, Bridgetown and Nannup. You can sample the local wine regions of the Blackwood River Valley, Geographe, and Ferguson Valley. Balingup is also just one hours’ drive from the crystal-clear beaches and award-winning wineries of the Busselton and Margaret River regions and the regional city of Bunbury.
