Gwelup

Gwelup is 12 kilometres north of the Perth CBD along the Mitchell Freeway within the local government area of the City of Stirling.

The name “Gwelup” refers to a small swamp located within the southern portion of the suburb. It was derived from the Noongar word “Gwelgannow” meaning “to shift position”. It was used mainly for market gardens until the 70s, when it was transformed into a residential suburb. Only a few market gardens along North Beach Road remain as a reminder of earlier times.

With coastal living high on the agenda for some, living near the city is essential for many working families. Gwelup ticks both these boxes. A drive into the city centre will take 15 to 20 minutes, however if you prefer taking public transport, you can jump on a bus that will take you to Warwick Station, where within four stops, you will arrive at Perth Underground – all in less than 40 minutes.

On the flip side, if you’re looking for somewhere close to the surf, you’ll love that Gwelup is only a 10-minute drive to Trigg beach and Mettams Pool, and only 15 minutes to Scarborough Beach, where you can enjoy a day on the sand or breakfast in one of the great cafes along the strip.

Gwelup has significant areas of public open space scattered throughout the residential area, offering meeting places and recreational opportunities for the local and wider community. There is the Gwelup Lake Reserve with plenty of walking tracks, Athletic Revolution – a boutique strength and conditioning gym, Kirby Swim School, and Karrinyup Scouts for the kids. The Colin Moore Community Resource Centre is another public venue that is perfect for hosting your next work function or birthday party. The facility offers air-conditioning complete with a kitchen, small office, play area and large patio.

For your shopping needs, Primewest Gwelup will be your local shopping destination with an exciting new Farmer Jack’s supermarket and over 15 speciality stores including a fish and chip shop, post office, pharmacy, optometrist, liquor store, café and much more. For a bigger shopping expedition, major shopping centres Karrinyup Shopping Centre and Westfield Innaloo are just a few minutes’ drive away.

Local students are catered for at the highly praised Lake Gwelup Primary School. Other public and private schools in neighbouring suburbs include Karrinyup Primary School, Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Newborough Primary School and St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School.

The population of Gwelup is 4,539 with a density of 1,353 persons per square km. The suburb is heavily populated with older, established and maturing couples and families who make up 60.2% of total residents.

Annual growth of the suburb is sitting at 23.8%. Based on settled sales as of 7 February 2022, the median land price in the suburb is $555,000 (reiwa.com.au).
