Waroona

Waroona is a country town located in the Peel region of WA along the South Western Highway, between Pinjarra and Harvey, approximately 113 kilometres from the Perth CBD. Surrounding suburbs include Hamel, Coolup and Meelon. Waroona is just one hour and 20 minutes south of Perth by car, and one hour 40 minutes by train via the Australind line direct to Waroona Station.

Nestled on the slopes of the Darling Range, Waroona is primarily an agricultural and tourist town, with plenty of activities for nature lovers. White water canoeing, water skiing, power boating and fishing, bushwalking, horse riding, wildlife spotting and searching for living fossils are just some of things to get stuck into.

There are plenty of water-based activities to enjoy in locations like the Waroona Dam, Lane Poole Reserve or Drakesbrook Weir. Waroona Dam is a great spot for the whole family and popular for camping, fishing, water skiing, picnics and BBQs. If you love canoeing, then Lane Poole Reserve is the spot for you. The calm still pools and contrasting rapids of the Murray River will provide an exciting challenge. Drakesbrook Weir is another spot for canoeing, swimming and fishing. From December to April take a stroll through the bush and you’ll catch thousands of monarch butterflies on the blossoms of native trees.

If you prefer dry activities, you can enjoy a day on the green at Waroona Golf Course. This 18-hole sand-green course is set in natural bush surrounds and boasts stunning displays of seasonal wildflowers. Moving indoors, you can visit the Waroona Recreation & Aquatic Centre which offers a 24/7 gym, group-fit classes, basketball/netball courts, a variety of racquet courts and a heated 25m indoor pool.

Shopping, services and amenities can all be found within the Waroona Town Centre. Here you’ll find galleries, art and craft shops, antique shops and boutiques plus a liquor store, chemist, post office and an IGA for all your grocery needs. For bigger shopping trips, a drive 20 minutes’ north will get you to Pinjarra Junction Shopping Centre.

There are two local schools; St Joseph’s Primary School and Waroona District High School, which welcomes children from Kindergarten to Year 10. Senior high school is usually completed by local students in the towns of Pinjarra, Harvey and Mandurah.

The population of Waroona is 2,934 with a density of 506 persons per square km. Of the families in
Waroona, 33.5% were couple families with children, 51.9% were couple families without children and 10.7% were one parent families.

Annual growth of the suburb is sitting at 5.7%. Based on settled sales as of 11 July 2022, the median land price in the suburb is $91,000 (reiwa.com.au).
