Margaret River

Margaret River is both a town and a region in the South West of WA, approximately 277 kilometres south of Perth. Its Local Government Area is the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River. A drive from Perth takes about 3.5 hours.

It is the heart of WA’s premier wine region, attracting an estimated 500,000 visitors annually. Prior to this it was better known for hardwood timber and agricultural production of the finest herbs. With over 200 vineyards in the region, you’ll never be short of places to sample some amazing wines.

Whilst it is hugely successful as a wine growing district, Margaret River has other wonderful characteristics that make it a popular place to live and visit. It’s relaxed, nature-loving, artistic vibe is showcased through its public street art, hand-crafted pieces at diverse galleries, boutique shops, upmarket restaurants, local ice-creameries and artisanal produce at the popular Farmer’s Market.

For residents who like to get out and about, there is plenty to explore. Thriving wildlife, waterfalls, picnic spots, superb clear blue beaches, impressive limestone caves and fauna-rich walking trails.

The surf culture is an inescapable part of daily life in Margaret River. The stunning beaches and some of the best surf conditions in the world have led to its worldwide fame. The coast to the west is a renowned surfing location famed for its surf breaks. The World Surf League championships are held at Surfer’s Point each year. Not everyone flocks to the water to surf and for that, the region has other options to cater for all swimming needs – the sheltered cove at Gnarabup is perfect for families that don’t want waves. Whilst the soft white sand and flat shallow waters at Redgate are another option for an easy entry to the saltwater.

Another great way to explore the town is below ground. There are several hundred caves located near Margaret River, all of them within Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Six of these are open to the public, including the multi-chambered Mammoth Cave, which contains fossils dating back over 35,000 years.

There are four primary schools in Margaret River; Margaret River Primary School, Rapids Landing Primary School, Margaret River Montessori School, and St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, and one high school, Margaret River Senior High School.

The population of Margaret River is estimated to be 8,918. Of the families in Margaret River, 41.2% were couple families without children, 41.1% were couple families with children and 12% were one parent families.
